United Rising’s Expedition to Hiroshima, Japan: Highlights from NERPs Conference 2024

From March 5th to 9th, United Rising seized a remarkable opportunity to take part in the Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability (NERPs) Conference held in Hiroshima, Japan.
In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Earth Summit and the centenary of the Geneva Conventions, NERPS 2024 stands as a testament to the ongoing commitment to reinforce global endeavours towards peace and environmental stewardship.

We were privileged to contribute to the panel discussion on resource conflict and socio-economic inequalities. Our paper titled “Greasing the Wheels of Colonialism: The Palm Oil Industry in West Papua” was presented with great pride. This collaborative effort was authored by Ms. Szilvia Csevár (Lecturer at The Hague University of Applied Sciences and Mentor at United Rising), George Ciprian Popal (Researcher at United Rising), and Yasmine Rugarli (Founder and Director of United Rising).

Key Highlights of our research

  • Theoretical framework linking colonialism and human security.
  • Examining the interconnectedness of gender, environment, and security.
  • Delving into the economic and political motivations driving the palm oil industry in West Papua.
  • Highlighting the intersectional harms experienced by Indigenous Women in West Papua.

Participating in this prestigious conference was an honour for us, and we are deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such vital discussions! As we continue our research and advocacy efforts, we invite you to stay tuned for updates.
